Established in 1854, Westmoreland has been a cornerstone of America’s emergence through the industrial age to take its place as the world’s most powerful Nation.
Founded in “Westmoreland” County, Pennsylvania, Westmoreland initially mined coal to meet the population’s growing needs for home heating, railroads, coal gasification, and industrial manufacturing. The Company’s westward expansion, initiated in 1995, marked a period of robust growth for the business, to include the acquisition of several mining operations stretching from Alberta in Canada down to San Juan in New Mexico.
With a rich legacy of innovation and an unwavering commitment to zero-harm worker safety, we have empowered and supported our communities, regions and nation-wide businesses throughout our ‘storied’ history. Westmoreland is proud of its diverse composition and unified culture, that has been forged over many generations, with unwavering support from many different stakeholders. We aim to be the best neighbors that we can be, recognizing our obligation and responsibility to return the land to an equal or better condition than we found it. We are continually inspired by our close associations with indigenous people from the First Nations in Canada, as well as the Navajo, Crow, Northern Cheyenne and Ute Mountain Tribes in the USA.
