Rosebud Mine

Rosebud MineMontana

The 25,000-acre Rosebud Mine, located in the northern Powder River Basin near Colstrip, Montana, and the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, supplies almost all of its 6-8 million tons of current production – sufficient to power 1 million typical U.S. homes – under long-term contract to the Colstrip Power Station adjacent to the mine.

Colstrip Station, one of the region’s most cost-efficient and cleanest power plants is coveted by North-Western utilities as an essential provider of long-term affordable, reliable baseload power, having been specifically designed to burn Rosebud product.

Working in close cooperation with federal and state authorities, Rosebud engages in advanced reclamation techniques before, during and after mining including soil material salvage and redistribution, backfilling, regrading and contouring, drainage construction, revegetation, and post-mine monitoring to ensure successful return of developed land to previous uses including grazing, pastureland, cropland, and wildlife habitat.

The mine has a close working relationship with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe that includes: a fulltime liaison, preferential hiring, transportation, support for tribal law enforcement, and a college scholarship program.

Rosebud has been recognized with a long list of federal, state and industry environmental and safety awards over its decades of reliable operations.
