SHEERNESS MINE, ALBERTA
The Sheerness Mine, with 7,000 hectares now under reclamation, traditionally supplied up to 3.4 million tonnes annually of production to the two-unit 780-MW Sheerness Generating Station over 32 years.
In the course of concurrent development and reclamation, with teams backfilling, recontouring and revegetating areas as development moved across permitted sites, Sheerness has in particular supplemented existing watersheds with additional features that support post-mining agricultural success and leases portions of its reclaimed land to farmers.
During its years of operation, the Sheerness Mine has been recognized with numerous company, industry and government safety awards, including recognition for an almost unprecedented stretch of 25 years without a single lost-time incident.
