POPLAR RIVER MINE, SASKATCHEWAN
The current annual 3.3 million-ton production from the 7,488-hectare Poplar River Mine, located near Coronach, South Central Saskatchewan, supplies the two generating units at Saskatchewan Power Corporation’s Poplar River Generating Station which utilizes cleaner, state-of-the-art electrically-powered equipment.
Poplar River Mine has reclaimed and re- vegetated more than 4275 hectares of land – around 100 hectares every year – by employing advanced techniques including detailed reclamation designs and tracking, 3D photogrammetric imaging and CAES technology, in order to return the land to productive use for forage production, cereal crops and native prairies.
Over the years, the mine has won numerous safety awards, including the 2019,2020 and 2021 John T. Ryan Awards from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum for notable achievements in safe production. The 2019 award cited the mine’s more than 275,000 hours without a reportable injury. (close to 30 years)
