The Estevan Mine, spanning 20,331 hectares in Southeastern Saskatchewan between Estevan and Bienfait, boasts an impressive annual production exceeding 3.0 million tons. This output is integral to the operations of Saskatchewan Power Corporation’s four-unit Boundary Dam and single-unit Shand Generating Station, an activated carbon processing joint venture, and a wholly-owned char plant dedicated to manufacturing barbecue briquettes.
Boundary Dam’s 115 MW Unit #3 is distinguished by its state-of-the-art Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) facility. This pioneering technology is capable of capturing over 90% of CO2 emissions from the unit—up to 75,000 tons per month—while demonstrating increasing reliability and rapidly decreasing operational costs.
The activated carbon derived from Estevan’s production is a highly versatile material, finding applications across various sectors including industrial use, medical products, agriculture, fuel storage, gas and chemical purification, and environmental remediation.
Estevan Mine employs cutting-edge techniques to ensure environmental stewardship. These include advanced topsoil stockpiling to minimize erosion, contour leveling, unmanned aerial vehicle surveying, 3D modeling, and equipment simulation software. These methods optimize reclamation efficiency and facilitate the re-vegetation of all disturbed land, ensuring it is restored to its original state.
