The Coal Valley Mine, a 20,660-hectare surface mine located south of Edson in Western Central Alberta, has a nominal capacity of 3.0 million tons of annual thermal coal production for export.
Situated in the province’s prized Foothills region at the junction of the Rocky Mountains and boreal forests, Coal Valley takes great pride in its nearly four decades of stewardship. The mine has established reclamation practices and procedures for recontouring, soil replacement, revegetation, and reforestation, which are now widely used across Alberta.
A notable achievement of these efforts is the award-winning development of pit end lakes, which have become templates and prototypes for the popular sports fishery industry.
