General Manager, San Juan Mine
Steve has 39 years’ experience within the coal industry. Steve started his career at Coastal Corporation at Southern Utah Fuel Company (SUFCO) on the bull gang. In 1986 he transferred to Skyline Mine in Utah which was also owned by Coastal Corporation. Steve has hands on experience on all UG mining equipment with particular specialisation in the field of Longwalls. In 2001 Steve started working for BHP Billiton in Waterflow, New Mexico steadily working his way from a frontline Supervisor up through middle management roles in both maintenance and production. BHP Billiton sold the San Juan Mine to Westmoreland in 2016 and Steve is currently the General Manager of this operations, having responsibility for close to 300 employees and the oversight of all aspects of the operation including production, coal haulage and reclamation.
Steve holds a Graduate Diploma from the Federation University of Australia in Engineering Maintenance Management. He earned a Six Sigma Black Belt Certification while employed by BHP Billiton and a Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma from Villanova University USA. Steve also has a Certified Mine Safety Professional Certificate from the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals.
