Paintearth Mine
The Paintearth Mine is a 6,226 Ha. surface strip mine located in Central Alberta south of the Village of Forestburg. The mine operates two active pits and supplies sub-bituminous coal to the three generating units at the Battle River Generating Station which are owned and operated by ATCO Power. The mine has been supplying coal to the station since 1956.
Coal is uncovered using the two draglines (1- BE1570; 1 – M8200) and a prestripping fleet (1- EX3600, 4 – Cat 789’s). The exposed coal is hauled from the mine to the generating station. Current annual production of the mine is 2.7 million tonnes. The coal supply contract for the mine expires in 2022.
Paintearth Mine was the first mine in Alberta to obtain reclamation certification for reclaimed land after mining.
